Demo(n)s

Liklukt: Sons of Svalbard

15/04/06  ||  Lord K Philipson

The hardest thing to do when writing a review is to write one about a band that doesn’t move you in any direction. The package is there, it all sounds fine but there’s nothing special to it, you know.

This is one of those reviews.

Liklukt (“corpse-stench” in English) sent this demo to me, complete with a biography in Norwegian. That’s the first thing to suck, a fucken biography written in Norwegian. On top of that, their site is pretty much completely in Norwegian as well. That’s suck number 2. Needless to say I haven’t bothered to read much of them mentioned things. I honestly didn’t expect anything but complete bollox musicwise when it came to this band. The bandname, the site, the inside-jokes, the lyrics, and the title of this demo just made my warning-bell go off. But never judge a pope by his penis, or however that saying goes.

Liklukt comes across pretty fine despite the poor production, the annoying sound of the kicks and the too-high-in-the-mix growls. What caught my attention first was the drums. Nice, competent, fills scattered all over, and I dig shit like that. They also sound programmed at times, and I seriously have a hard time deciding if this is human flesh playing or not. Either way it sounds very fine. Except for the actual sound of them.

“Dozer load” starts off with some (prolly funny-as-fuck to them) incoherrent Norwegian bullshit before turning the tables to some brutal death metal with a decent groove. The somewhat thrashy guitars in the middle of the tune brings a little smile to my face. I have no idea why, coz it’s not the greatest riff I ever heard or anything. It must be becoz of the beers last night. The typical Cannibal Corpse-blast is all over the place, and it works for me.

“Deadly detour” moves into slower territories and gives me some Bathory-vibes with a few of the riffs. Verses of double-bass and some melodic “chorus” (I guess that’s what it’s supposed to be anyways) brings this tune together. A weird break in the middle is included, and that part makes no sense to me.

“Russian chopper attack” further makes me get the feeling of a drum-machine being used. Both the fastest and most boring tune on this piece. The groove is lacking, the riffs just becomes blurry and the song as a whole gives me little-to-nothing actually. The weakest link on this effort.

“The march of Svalbard” starts of really promising and ranks up as my fave among the 5 recorded. Some nice melodic touches to this one and I even notice myself tapping my foot to it. This is the song of recommendation if you decide to check Liklukt out.

The closer, “Politisk renkespill”, holds some Slayer-ish drums and riffs here and there. It’s not as strong as “The march”, but definitely better than “Chopper”.

Liklukt is a decent band and they are alot better than the first impression hints at. I wish they cut down on the crappy lyrics, the fun’n’games attitude and the poor production, that would make it easier for one to take them seriously.
